The Tunable Transmitter Assembly (TTA) is a high performance continuous wave (CW) tunable laser source combined with a 10Gb/s InP MZ modulator for use in the C-band window covering 1528nm to 1565nm. The laser and control electronics are pre-mounted on a dedicated circuit board for easy production installation. The TTA features shuttered tuning, optical power control, trace tone and SBS dither circuitry. Comprehensive control and system reporting is provided over the RS232 interface. All MZ data and bias inputs are provided on connectors to allow the customer full control over the MZ data and biasing schemes. The TTA implements the DSDBR wideband tunable laser and InP MZ. This laser is a fully monolithic InP chip designed for high volume, low cost manufacturing. With no moving parts, it is a low voltage electronically tuned device enabling rapid wavelength switching with straightforward control electronics. Optical output power can be controlled by means of the integrated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) which also acts as a shutter to allow dark tuning when reverse biased. The InP Mach-Zehnder modulator provides superior performance compared to an EML modulator and comparable performance to Lithium Niobate Mach-Zehnder modulators. However the InP MZ also enables multi component integration. Laser operation is at a fixed temperature. Wavelength stability is guaranteed by an internal wavelength locker for control to a 50GHz or 100GHz ITU wavelength grid.
